My Path To choreography

I started rec dancing before my 2nd birthday. At age 6, I joined EDC (ENCORE Dance Company). We put on shows at places like the Multnomah County Fair, the Oregon State Fair, the Bite of Portland, Rose Festival, Beaverton Parade, Farmers markets, etc. It was SO much fun, and it makes me sad that these performance opportunities don’t really exist anymore. EDC transitioned from a recreational team to a competitive team, and at the age of 12, I entered the competitive dance world.

I spent 4 years doing comp before the Covid lockdown changed everything. Training in advanced dance over Zoom was maddening, dynamic movements and floor work made staying on camera impossible. I quickly realized that if I wanted to continue honing my skills as a dancer, I had to challenge myself. I began to understand how to transform an idea for a dance into a completed piece of art. When the dance world reopened, for the 21/22 season, I found that not only had I retained my skills and abilities as a dancer, but I also had a clear voice as a choreographer.

ANTI-LULLABY

Anti-Lullaby began as a student project during lockdown. After showing it to my studio director, she allowed me to use it as my 21/22 solo. That year was a huge success. I found myself with scores above 290. It felt surreal to say “I am” on stage when I got asked who my choreographer was. It wasn’t long after this that my mentors and instructors started asking me to clean and eventually to choreograph pieces.

In 2022, I was given the opportunity to choreograph Josiphine Pearson's competition solo. I am deeply grateful to the Pearson family (and ENCORE Performing Arts Center) for having faith in me. Working with Josie and seeing her growth, perseverance, and success gave me a new and unexpectedly joyous relationship with the stage.

Imagine my surpris when Josie's Solo went viral! It has 1.8 million Views, and gets a few thousand views a day. My channel also has over 4,500 subscribers all thanks to this video.
